Poverty is on the rise, record numbers of people are relying on food stamps and we've seen no relief for the foreclosure crisis. There are increasing rates of child abuse and domestic violence linked to this recession. State governments don't have financial resources to cope at the exact moment when those resources are most needed. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have lowered Medicaid payments or eliminated people from eligibility. The senior economist of the International Monetary Fund recently warned of another Great Depression.

    Comment   When the railroad began serving New Mexico in 1880, it brought a steady stream of tourists eager to purchase an array of items invented purely for them by Pueblo and Navajo artisans collaborating with non-Indian dealers. Thus did the curio trade begin, expanding to include a network of cottage industries, retail venues and a booming mail order business that all had far-reaching consequences into the 20th century.
FRITZ SCHOLDER: AN INTIMATE LOOK - Museum Exhibit
    Comment   In what is the largest showing of Scholder’s work to date, Fritz Scholder: An Intimate Look will include nearly 100 of the artist’s paintings, prints and sculptures. Joseph Sanchez, IAIA Museum curator, selected work from Scholder’s personal archives--those pieces Scholder kept for himself--offering an extraordinary glimpse into the artist’s life. Although the exhibit opens in July, a public reception will be held during the week of Indian Market on Wednesday, August 20th from 4 to 6 p.m.

Pakistani spy chief says no war with India

Lieutenant-General Ahmed Shujaa Pasha told the German magazine in an interview terrorism, not India, was Pakistan's enemy, and he said he took orders from the civilian president.

EU faces deepening energy crunch over Russian gas
